IMD Issues Cold Wave Alert for Punjab, Rajasthan; Dense Fog to Hit UP, Haryana

The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued a significant weather alert for North India, forecasting intensifying cold wave conditions and dense fog that will impact the region over the next 48 to 72 hours. According to the latest All India Weather Warning Bulletin, the mercury is set to plunge across large swathes of north, central, and eastern India, affecting daily life and transportation networks.

This sharp decline in temperatures is being driven by a combination of clear skies and cold northerly winds, which are facilitating rapid heat loss from the ground during the night. The meteorological department has indicated that minimum temperatures are likely to remain 2 to 4 degrees Celsius below the seasonal normal, with the most severe conditions expected during late night and early morning hours.

Impact on Northern States

Residents in Punjab, Haryana, Rajasthan, and Uttar Pradesh are expected to bear the brunt of this cold spell. The IMD bulletin highlights that these states will witness sharper night-time cooling. The persistence of dry northerly winds is a primary factor contributing to the sustained fall in temperatures across these agrarian belts.

Dense Fog and Visibility Concerns

Alongside the drop in mercury, the IMD has warned of dense to very dense fog enveloping parts of Punjab, Haryana, and Uttar Pradesh. This weather phenomenon is expected to persist primarily during the early morning hours, significantly reducing visibility at isolated locations.

Such conditions typically pose severe challenges for the transport sector. Morning commuters, as well as long-distance travelers, may face delays as poor visibility impacts movement on national highways, railway tracks, and at airports. Authorities often recommend that citizens plan their travel with a buffer for potential delays during such weather events.

Central and Eastern India Update

The impact of the changing weather systems is not limited to the north. Parts of Madhya Pradesh and Bihar are also likely to experience dense fog during morning hours. The IMD notes that low-lying areas and river belts in these states are particularly susceptible to fog formation, which may lead to poor visibility for short durations, affecting daily movement and early morning commerce.

Rainfall and Future Trends

regarding precipitation, the IMD has ruled out any widespread rainfall activity across most parts of the country during this period. However, owing to weak weather systems, isolated light rain or drizzle may occur in limited pockets of northern India. In contrast, southern and peninsular states are expected to witness largely dry and stable weather conditions.

Looking ahead to the next two to three days, the weather department predicts that minimum temperatures over North India may dip slightly further before stabilizing. While day temperatures are expected to remain near normal, the disparity between day and night temperatures will result in mornings and nights feeling particularly cold. Central and eastern India are also projected to see gradual night-time cooling with minimal changes in daytime conditions.

Public Advisory

In light of the forecast, experts and officials advise the public to take adequate precautions against cold exposure. Vulnerable demographics, including the elderly and children, should ensure proper protection during the night and early morning. Furthermore, motorists traveling through affected states are urged to drive cautiously, utilizing fog lights where necessary, due to the reduced visibility caused by the dense fog.
