New Delhi: Leader of Opposition in the Lok Sabha Rahul Gandhi on Friday convened a strategic review meeting with Congress MPs, asserting that the government appeared to be under pressure following a week of intense parliamentary exchanges. The meeting at the Parliament complex was held to assess the party’s floor management and performance during the ongoing Winter Session.
The review took place just a day after Union Home Minister Amit Shah delivered a comprehensive rebuttal in the Lok Sabha regarding allegations of “vote theft” and irregularities in voter lists. Party sources indicated that Gandhi told lawmakers that the Opposition’s coordinated strategy had successfully placed the ruling dispensation on the defensive.
Focus on Electoral Reforms
During the meeting, Congress leaders discussed the party’s interventions on critical issues, including election reforms and the debate commemorating 150 years of Vande Mataram. While the discussion on Vande Mataram has concluded in both Houses, debates on electoral processes continue in the Rajya Sabha. Congress leaders signalled that they would persist in raising concerns about the fairness of electoral mechanisms as the session progresses.
On Thursday, Amit Shah had firmly rejected the Opposition’s claims regarding the Special Intensive Revision (SIR) and appointments linked to the Election Commission. He accused the Opposition of raising objections selectively, suggesting that questions about voter lists only surfaced following electoral defeats. Sources revealed that Shah addressed the House despite running a high fever of around 102 degrees, having been examined by doctors shortly before his speech. Prime Minister Narendra Modi later praised the Home Minister’s intervention as fact-based and effective.
Connecting with Citizen Issues
Beyond electoral politics, the meeting also reviewed how effectively the party highlighted public concerns. Deputy Leader of the Congress in the Lok Sabha, Gaurav Gogoi, stated that discussions centred on whether the party’s messaging resonated with issues affecting citizens.
Congress leaders noted that they had successfully raised topics such as aviation disruptions, rising air pollution, and labour-related grievances during the session. Chief Whip K. Suresh described the gathering as a customary mid-session exercise conducted by Rahul Gandhi to gather feedback and evaluate MP performance.
Notable absentees included Shashi Tharoor, the MP from Thiruvananthapuram, who had informed the leadership of his unavailability in advance, and Chandigarh MP Manish Tewari.
