A distinct shift in weather patterns was observed across the country on Thursday morning, with North India grappling with dense fog and reduced visibility while the southern peninsula braced for wet spells. The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued specific forecasts and warnings, highlighting a drop in night temperatures across Central India and continued rainfall activity in the south.
Residents in North India woke up to thick fog, which significantly impacted visibility in several districts. In Delhi, Punjab, Haryana, and Western Uttar Pradesh, visibility levels reportedly dropped to between 50 and 100 meters in various locations. The minimum temperatures in these regions remained below normal, maintaining a cold grip on the plains. Meanwhile, mountainous states are likely to see persistent cloud cover with chances of light snowfall in higher altitudes.
Temperature Drop in Central India
Central India is witnessing a steady decline in mercury levels. Cities in Madhya Pradesh, including Bhopal, Indore, Ujjain, Gwalior, Rewa, and Satna, recorded minimum temperatures ranging between 8 and 12 degrees Celsius. Dry winds have exacerbated the chill during the night and early morning hours.
Similarly, in Uttar Pradesh, key cities such as Lucknow, Prayagraj, and Kanpur reported minimum temperatures below the seasonal average, accompanied by light morning haze.
Rainfall in the South and Northeast
Weather systems remain active over South India. The IMD has predicted light to moderate rainfall for the coastal districts of Tamil Nadu and Puducherry. Chennai is expected to remain cloudy, while parts of Kerala and south coastal Andhra Pradesh may witness showers.
In the Northeast, light rain is anticipated in select districts of Assam, Arunachal Pradesh, and Meghalaya. Scattered showers may also occur in parts of Nagaland and Manipur. Further east, Bihar and Jharkhand experienced shallow to moderate fog in the morning, with temperatures settling below normal.
Stable Conditions in the West
Weather conditions in West India, particularly across Rajasthan, Gujarat, and Maharashtra, remain largely stable. While night temperatures are low, days are characterized by mild sunshine. Residents in Mumbai and Pune reported feeling a slight chill.
Forecast for December 12-13
December 12: Dense fog is likely to persist across North India, potentially affecting morning visibility in Punjab, Haryana, Delhi, and Western Uttar Pradesh. Minimum temperatures in Madhya Pradesh and Uttar Pradesh are expected to dip further. In the south, coastal areas of Tamil Nadu and Kerala will likely continue receiving light to moderate rain.
December 13: Fog intensity may increase in North India, with minimum temperatures remaining below normal. The cold wave impact could deepen in Central India, particularly in Madhya Pradesh. While the intensity of rainfall in South India may reduce slightly, scattered showers are still expected in parts of Tamil Nadu and Kerala. Northeastern states will continue to see cloud cover and light rain.
