Residents across North and Central India should brace for a chilly end to the year. The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued a forecast predicting persistent cold and foggy weather conditions between December 25 and 28. According to the weather agency’s latest assessment, large swathes of the region will experience significant drops in visibility and temperature.
The IMD has specifically flagged the likelihood of dense to very dense fog during late night and early morning hours. This weather pattern is expected to cover Uttar Pradesh, Bihar, Madhya Pradesh, Haryana, Punjab, Delhi-NCR, and parts of Rajasthan. Commuters are advised to exercise caution, as reduced visibility during these peak hours may disrupt road and rail traffic in several districts.
Cold Day Conditions and Temperature Dip
Beyond the fog, the biting cold is set to intensify. In Bihar, the IMD has warned of ‘cold day’ conditions, particularly affecting the northern and central districts. The agency noted that isolated cold wave–like situations cannot be ruled out during this period. Similar cold stress is anticipated at isolated locations in eastern Uttar Pradesh and northern Madhya Pradesh.
Regarding the temperature trend, minimum temperatures across Northwest, Central, and parts of East India are expected to dip by 2–3 degrees Celsius over the next one to two days. following this initial drop, mercury levels are likely to remain largely stable through the end of the forecast period. Several locations in the plains have already recorded single-digit night temperatures, while hill stations are witnessing sharper declines due to prevailing northerly winds.
Western Disturbance Approaching
The weather department has also indicated a shift in atmospheric conditions over the mountains. A weak western disturbance is projected to approach the Western Himalayan region starting December 27. This system may bring light rain or snowfall to parts of Jammu & Kashmir, Himachal Pradesh, and Uttarakhand between December 27 and 28.
Meteorologists suggest that this disturbance could further intensify cold conditions in the adjoining plains in the days following its passage.

In light of these predictions, authorities have advised the public to remain vigilant. Travelers should plan their journeys carefully during early morning hours to navigate poor visibility safely. Vulnerable groups, particularly the elderly and children, are urged to take adequate precautions against the cold to avoid health complications.
