Indian Railways Clarifies on Mobile Ticket Rules: Digital UTS Tickets Valid, No Printout Needed

New Delhi: The Indian Railways has issued a strong clarification regarding the validity of mobile tickets, putting an end to widespread speculation circulating on social media. Addressing recent rumors that claimed digital tickets for unreserved travel were being invalidated, railway authorities have confirmed that the existing rules remain unchanged.

Reports had recently surfaced on various platforms suggesting that the Railways had made physical printouts mandatory for all passengers, effectively rendering mobile tickets useless. However, official sources have termed these claims as misleading and factually incorrect.

No Change in Ticketing Rules

According to railway officials, no new circular or order has been issued to modify the current ticketing framework. The Unreserved Ticketing System (UTS) app and the broader digital ticketing mechanism continue to operate exactly as before. Passengers traveling on unreserved tickets can continue to rely on the digital format without fear of penalties.

The Railways’ official stance highlights the following key points regarding the UTS app:

  • Paperless Mode: If a ticket is booked under the ‘Paperless Mode’ in the UTS app, simply displaying the ticket on the mobile screen is legally sufficient.
  • No Printout Required: For such digital bookings, carrying a physical printout is not mandatory.
  • Device Restriction: The ticket must be displayed on the same mobile phone used to make the booking. Screenshots or forwarded images are generally not accepted.
  • Verification: Ticket examiners (TTEs) and checking staff are authorized to verify the validity of the ticket directly from the passenger’s mobile screen.

When is a Printout Mandatory?

While clearing the air on digital tickets, officials also reiterated the specific condition where a physical copy is actually required. This applies only if a passenger explicitly chooses the ‘Paper Mode’ option within the UTS app. In this specific scenario, the passenger is required to print the ticket using an Automatic Ticket Vending Machine (ATVM) or at a ticket counter. This rule has been in place since the inception of the service and is not a new modification.

Origin of the Rumors

Sources indicate that the confusion likely stemmed from the misinterpretation of rules following recent crackdowns on digital ticket fraud. Isolated incidents of misuse may have led to stricter checking in some zones, which was wrongly extrapolated as a blanket ban on mobile tickets. The Railways emphasized that these administrative actions were not policy shifts.

Appeal to Passengers

The Railways has appealed to the public to ignore unverified news on social media and rely solely on official communication channels. The digital ticketing system was introduced to enhance passenger convenience, and authorities assured that no measures have been taken to reduce its accessibility.

Passengers are advised to ensure their mobile phones are charged and the UTS app is functional during the journey to facilitate smooth verification by checking staff.
