An informal dinner meeting of nearly 40 Brahmin legislators of the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) in Lucknow has triggered a political controversy, prompting the party’s state leadership to issue a stern public warning against organising community-based gatherings.
The meeting, held at a BJP legislator’s residence earlier this week on the sidelines of the ongoing Assembly session, was described by participants as a routine discussion on local development and electoral roll revisions. However, the subsequent caution from the party has drawn sharp reactions from opposition parties and fueled debate on social media.
Party Issues Stern Warning
While senior leaders initially sought to downplay the gathering, the situation escalated after Uttar Pradesh BJP president Pankaj Chaudhary publicly rebuked the practice. He stated that organising community-centric meetings violates the party’s organisational discipline and ideological principles. Chaudhary warned that such actions could attract strict disciplinary measures in the future.
Deputy Chief Minister Keshav Prasad Maurya had earlier remarked that such interactions among legislators are common and should not be misinterpreted. Despite this, the party chief’s statement indicated a more serious view from the top leadership, aiming to reinforce discipline and prevent any perception of factionalism based on caste lines.
Opposition and Social Media React
Opposition parties were quick to criticise the BJP’s stance, claiming the episode pointed to internal friction and dissatisfaction within the ruling party. They alleged that the warning suggested that some legislators felt marginalised, compelling them to coordinate informally. The development was framed as evidence of unequal treatment within the BJP’s ranks.
The controversy also gained significant traction online. Political commentators and social media users questioned what they perceived as a double standard. Shiv Sena (UBT) leader Priyanka Chaturvedi, in a post on X, questioned why a meeting of Brahmin leaders was being singled out for caution. Many users drew comparisons with past outreach events organised by the BJP targeting OBC, Dalit, and other communities, which were often projected as social initiatives.
BJP sources, however, maintained that the party’s rules against caste-based politics apply uniformly to all. They clarified that the caution was a measure to prevent misinterpretation and was not aimed at any specific community. The incident has now sparked a wider debate in Uttar Pradesh on caste representation, internal party communication, and political messaging ahead of future political contests.
