‘Yogi Ki Paati’ : UP CM warns citizens against ‘digital arrest’ scams, Calls for Cyber Awareness

Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath has reached out directly to the citizens of the state through a public message titled ‘Yogi Ki Paati’. The communication aims to raise awareness about the growing menace of cybercrime, specifically focusing on the fraudulent practice known as ‘digital arrest’.

In his address, the Chief Minister acknowledged the dual nature of modern technology. While mobile phones and computers have significantly eased daily life, he noted that they have also introduced new challenges in the form of cyber offences. He assured the public that the state government is implementing robust measures to strengthen digital safety mechanisms across Uttar Pradesh.

No Legal Basis for ‘Digital Arrest’

A key highlight of the Chief Minister’s message was a clarification regarding the legal standing of online arrests. Adityanath stated explicitly that no provision for ‘digital arrest’ exists under Indian law. He warned that cybercriminals often exploit fear by using intimidating language and impersonating police or government officials.

These fraudsters typically operate through video calls, websites, or social media platforms to frighten innocent individuals into transferring money. The Chief Minister reiterated that legitimate law enforcement agencies or government bodies do not conduct arrests online, nor do they demand payments through digital modes during an investigation.

Call for Caution and Data Privacy

The ‘Yogi Ki Pāti’ letter also served as an advisory on data privacy. The Chief Minister urged citizens to exercise caution while using social media platforms. He explained that criminals often harvest publicly shared personal information to orchestrate detailed scams and blackmail attempts.

He appealed to the public to safeguard their personal data diligently. Citizens were advised against sharing sensitive details such as identity documents, One Time Passwords (OTPs), or real-time location data with unknown entities.

Immediate Reporting is Crucial

Addressing the steps to take in the event of a crime, Adityanath advised victims to act swiftly. He emphasized that immediate reporting significantly improves the chances of preventing financial loss and recovering stolen funds. Citizens should report cyber fraud incidents to the national cyber helpline number 1930 without delay.

Concluding his message, the Chief Minister called for collective responsibility to combat this threat. He urged individuals to spread awareness among their families and neighbours, with a special focus on protecting senior citizens who are often more vulnerable to such frauds. He appealed for a united effort to build a safe and cybercrime-free Uttar Pradesh.
