If you have urgent banking work lined up for this month, it is advisable to check the holiday schedule before visiting your branch. According to the Reserve Bank of India (RBI) calendar, banks across various states will remain closed for up to 16 days in January 2026. This total includes national holidays, regional festivals, and regular weekly offs such as Sundays and the second and fourth Saturdays.
It is important to note that bank holidays in India vary significantly from state to state. While central government holidays and national gazetted holidays apply nationwide, many closures are strictly regional, depending on local festivals and state government notifications. A holiday in one state does not necessarily imply a closure in another.
Digital Banking Remains Unaffected
Despite the branch closures, banking operations will not come to a complete halt. The RBI has ensured that digital channels remain active 24×7. Customers can continue to use services such as Unified Payments Interface (UPI), mobile banking, and internet banking for fund transfers, bill payments, and balance checks without interruption.
Automated Teller Machines (ATMs) will also remain functional for cash withdrawals and mini-statements. Customers using third-party apps like Google Pay, PhonePe, and Paytm can conduct transactions seamlessly even on bank holidays.
