In his post, PM Modi specifically acknowledged the indomitable courage of Vegdaji Bhil, stating his story is an inseparable part of Somnath’s glorious history. He noted that despite facing threats of inhuman violence from invaders, Bhil stood firm in his duty to protect the temple.

Who was Vegdaji Bhil?

Vegdaji Bhil was a valiant warrior from the Bhil tribal community of Gujarat. According to folk history and local traditions, he made the ultimate sacrifice while defending the Somnath temple from foreign aggressors. He is remembered as a symbol of the countless unsung heroes who, without the backing of a state or army, fought to protect their faith and land. Historians note that the defense of Somnath was not limited to kings and armies but also involved significant contributions from local and tribal communities.

Who was Veer Hamirji Gohil?

Veer Hamirji Gohil was a courageous warrior from the Gohil Rajput dynasty of Gujarat. Historical accounts from the medieval period detail his fierce resistance against foreign invaders to protect the Somnath temple. It is said that he, along with his companions, fought until his last breath to uphold the sanctity of the temple. In Gujarat’s history, Veer Hamirji Gohil is revered as an icon of bravery, sacrifice, and the defense of ‘dharma’ (righteousness), never surrendering even in the most adverse circumstances.
