Prime Minister Narendra Modi led the ‘Shaurya Yatra’ (Procession of Valour) at the Somnath Temple in Gujarat on Sunday, the final day of the ‘Somnath Swabhiman Parv’. The procession was a key event in the four-day national commemoration marking one thousand years since the first recorded attack on the temple in 1026.

The symbolic yatra, which began around 9:45 am, was organised to honour the courage and resilience associated with the temple’s preservation through centuries of invasions and reconstructions. Gujarat Chief Minister Bhupendra Patel and Deputy Chief Minister Harsh Sanghavi accompanied the Prime Minister during the event.

In a post on X, PM Modi described Somnath as a “symbol of civilisational courage,” adding that its sacred legacy continues to guide generations. Following the procession, he offered darshan and performed pooja at the temple and later addressed a public gathering linked to the Swabhiman Parv.

PM’s Engagements in Somnath

The Prime Minister, who is on a three-day visit to his home state, arrived in Somnath on Saturday and participated in several programmes. On Saturday evening, he attended cultural events that included Omkar Mantra chanting and a grand drone show. A government release stated that nearly 3,000 drones were used to depict key historical events associated with the temple.

He also chaired a meeting of the Shree Somnath Trust to review ongoing and planned infrastructure-related projects on the temple premises. The Somnath Swabhiman Parv, held from January 8 to 11, also coincides with the 75th anniversary of the modern reconstruction of the temple, a project initiated by Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel after Independence and completed in 1951.

Inaugurations Lined Up Across Gujarat

Later in the day, the Prime Minister’s schedule includes travelling to Rajkot to inaugurate a trade show and the Vibrant Gujarat Regional Conference at Marwadi University. In the evening, he is set to travel to Ahmedabad to inaugurate the remaining stretch of the Ahmedabad Metro Rail Project’s Phase-2, connecting Sector-10A to Mahatma Mandir, further boosting the state’s urban infrastructure.
