The Election Commission of India (ECI) on Thursday announced an extension of the deadline for submitting enumeration forms under the Special Intensive Revision (SIR) of electoral rolls. The relief has been granted to five states—Tamil Nadu, Gujarat, Madhya Pradesh, Chhattisgarh, and Uttar Pradesh—and the Union Territory of Andaman and Nicobar Islands.
The poll body stated that the schedule was revised based on specific requests received from the Chief Electoral Officers of these six regions. However, notably absent from the list of extensions is West Bengal, a state that has seen significant political friction and protests regarding the SIR process.
Revised timelines for submission
Under the new schedule, the submission deadlines vary across the states. For Tamil Nadu and Gujarat, the last date for submitting enumeration forms has been pushed to December 14. The draft electoral roll for these two states is scheduled to be published on December 19.
A slightly longer extension has been provided to Madhya Pradesh, Chhattisgarh, and the Andaman and Nicobar Islands. Voters in these regions now have until December 18 to submit their forms, with the draft roll publication set for December 23.
Uttar Pradesh has received the most significant extension. The deadline for enumeration in the state is now December 26, and the draft roll will be published on December 31.
West Bengal and other states
West Bengal was not included in this extension despite facing intense criticism and protests against the SIR exercise. Reports from the state have alleged that work pressure and stress related to the revision process have led to several deaths, including those of booth-level officers (BLO).
For West Bengal, along with Goa, Rajasthan, Puducherry, and Lakshadweep, the deadline for submitting enumeration forms remained Thursday. These states and UTs are expected to publish their draft rolls on December 16.
Kerala operates on a separate timeline, with its submission deadline set for December 18 and draft roll publication on December 23.
Focus on inclusion
The Election Commission emphasized its commitment to ensuring no eligible voter is left out of the process. The final electoral rolls are slated for publication in February 2026.
