Winter chill deepens: IMD forecasts dense fog, cold day conditions across North, East and Central India

Winter’s grip over India is tightening, with the India Meteorological Department (IMD) forecasting that dense fog and cold day conditions are likely to persist across large swathes of the country. The weather agency has indicated that these conditions will particularly affect northern, eastern, and central regions in the days ahead.

According to the latest bulletin, minimum temperatures have remained markedly below normal in parts of central and southern India. Among the coldest locations recorded in the plains were Bareilly in Uttar Pradesh and Ambikapur in Chhattisgarh.

Fog and Visibility Concerns

Dense to very dense fog has already been observed at isolated places across Jammu and Kashmir, Punjab, Haryana, Uttar Pradesh, Bihar, Jharkhand, Delhi, and Tripura. This has significantly reduced visibility during night and early morning hours, potentially impacting road, rail, and air transport. The IMD has cautioned travelers to remain alert as these conditions are expected to continue.

Shallow fog was also reported over Sub-Himalayan West Bengal, Sikkim, Uttarakhand, and parts of eastern Rajasthan. The forecast suggests that dense to very dense fog will likely continue during night and morning hours over Uttar Pradesh, Punjab, Haryana, Chandigarh, Bihar, parts of northeast India, Madhya Pradesh, Chhattisgarh, Jharkhand, and Odisha.

Rainfall and Snowfall Outlook

While most of the country remained dry, light precipitation was recorded in Jammu and Kashmir and Ladakh. Looking ahead, the IMD stated that light to moderate rainfall or snowfall is likely to continue over the western Himalayan region. This includes Jammu and Kashmir, Ladakh, Himachal Pradesh, and Uttarakhand.

The weather department also noted the possibility of isolated thunderstorm and lightning activity accompanied by gusty winds in parts of this region. However, rainfall activity elsewhere remains largely limited.

Cold Day Conditions

Severe cold day conditions were reported at isolated locations in North Madhya Pradesh, while cold day conditions prevailed in a few places in Uttar Pradesh. The IMD is closely monitoring the situation and stated it will issue further updates as weather patterns evolve. No specific warning has been issued for fishermen at this time.
