Major cities across India are set to enforce extensive traffic diversions and security protocols on the night of December 31, 2025, to ensure public safety during New Year’s Eve celebrations. Police departments have issued detailed advisories, with most restrictions beginning in the evening and extending into the early hours of January 1, 2026.
Authorities are preparing for massive turnouts at popular public spaces, entertainment districts, and tourist destinations. The measures include road closures, creation of pedestrian-only zones, and a significant increase in police presence to maintain law and order.
Delhi’s Connaught Place Under Lockdown
In the national capital, Delhi Police have announced a near-total vehicular shutdown in and around Connaught Place from 7:00 pm onwards. No private or public transport will be permitted in the inner, middle, or outer circles of the commercial hub. Traffic diversions will be in effect at key points including Mandi House, Bengali Market, and Minto Road. To manage the flow of commuters, the Delhi Metro Rail Corporation will close the exit gates at Rajiv Chowk station from 9:00 pm.

Mumbai Deploys Over 17,000 Personnel
Mumbai is bolstering its security with a massive deployment of over 17,000 police personnel across the city and its suburbs. High-footfall areas like the Gateway of India, Marine Drive, and Juhu Beach will be monitored by special units, including the State Reserve Police Force (SRPF) and Quick Response Teams (QRT). Mumbai Police stated that the arrangements are designed to prevent any untoward incidents during the celebrations.

Bengaluru and Chennai Restrict Major Roads
In Bengaluru, central business districts including MG Road and Brigade Road will be converted into pedestrian-only zones from 8:00 pm. To curb reckless driving, all city flyovers, except the one leading to the airport, will be closed from 11:00 pm to 6:00 am. The MG Road Metro Station will also see restricted entry and exit after 10:00 pm.

The Greater Chennai Traffic Police will close Kamarajar Salai, which runs along Marina Beach, from the War Memorial to the Lighthouse from 8:00 pm. Similar restrictions are planned for Elliot’s Beach. Authorities have prohibited public entry into the sea and will use ANPR cameras to monitor and penalise speeding vehicles.

In Hyderabad, a complete traffic ban will be imposed on Tank Bund, NTR Marg, and PVNR Marg (Necklace Road) from 11:00 pm to 2:00 am. Most flyovers will be closed based on traffic flow, though the PVNR Expressway will remain open for airport passengers with valid tickets.
