LUCKNOW: The Uttar Pradesh capital has set a new benchmark in renewable energy adoption, emerging as the top district in the state for rooftop solar power. Under the Pradhan Mantri Surya Ghar Muft Bijli Yojana (PMSGY), Lucknow has successfully completed 62,271 rooftop solar (RTS) installations to date.
This surge in adoption has helped Uttar Pradesh cross a significant milestone of 3 lakh total installations across the state. Officials attribute this rapid progress to the efficient monitoring and strategic push by the Yogi Adityanath-led government to promote green energy.
Acceleration in Green Energy Adoption
The pace of implementation has seen a dramatic increase recently. According to state data, while the first 2.5 lakh installations took 270 days to complete, the subsequent 50,000 installations were achieved in a record time of just 43 days. This sixfold increase in speed underscores the aggressive rollout of the scheme.
The initiative aims to provide free electricity, reduce household utility bills, and offer opportunities for additional income through surplus power generation. With these figures, Uttar Pradesh has positioned itself among the top three states in the country for solar energy adoption.
District-wise Performance
While Lucknow leads the tally by a significant margin, other major districts have also contributed heavily to the state’s green energy goals. Varanasi follows Lucknow with 26,208 completed installations. Kanpur Nagar ranks third with 18,562 installations.
Other districts making the top list include:
- Bareilly: 12,952 installations
- Agra: 11,033 installations
- Prayagraj: 9,719 installations
- Raebareli: 8,616 installations
- Jhansi: 7,674 installations
- Barabanki: 6,477 installations
- Gorakhpur: 6,262 installations
Administrative Push
The district administration in Lucknow, along with teams from UPNEDA (Uttar Pradesh New and Renewable Energy Development Agency) and local DISCOMs, worked extensively to achieve the target of over 62,000 units. To ensure inclusive development and streamline the process, Project Officers (POs) have been appointed in all 75 districts. Furthermore, the monthly installation rate has been doubled in 23 specific districts to maintain momentum.
