IMD Weather Update: Cold wave and dense fog persist in North and Central India; no major shift in temperature trends

The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued a fresh weather bulletin highlighting the persistence of winter conditions across large swathes of the country. According to the latest update, North and Central India continue to experience cold temperatures and fog, while weather patterns in other regions remain largely stable. The department noted that no significant shift in temperature trends has been observed recently.

The IMD forecast suggests that the current atmospheric conditions are likely to prevail for the next few days, with residents in the northern plains advised to remain cautious of reduced visibility during morning hours.

North India Grapples with Dense Fog

Winter’s grip remains tight over North India, with the IMD reporting dense fog in several parts of Delhi-NCR, Haryana, and Punjab. The thick fog cover has affected visibility in the early hours, impacting daily commuters. In the hilly states of Himachal Pradesh and Uttarakhand, higher altitudes are witnessing intense cold, while the plains are experiencing conditions akin to a cold wave.

Chill Intensifies in Central India

In Central India, the weather remains predominantly dry, but the mercury has dipped. The IMD observed a drop in minimum temperatures across Madhya Pradesh and Uttar Pradesh, leading to colder mornings and nights. Some isolated pockets in these states have also reported light fog. In Rajasthan, while the days remain clear and sunny, the plains are recording night temperatures below the normal average.

Conditions in West and East India

The western states of Gujarat and Maharashtra are witnessing dry and stable weather. However, many cities in Gujarat have recorded a dip in night temperatures, although sunny days are keeping the overall conditions comfortable. In Maharashtra, interior regions have not seen any major fluctuations in temperature.

Meanwhile, in Eastern India, the winter chill is palpable during the early morning and late night hours. States like Bihar and Jharkhand have recorded minimum temperatures below normal levels. The weather across most North-Eastern states remains normal with no significant changes reported.

Stable Weather in the South

South India continues to see relatively stable weather patterns. According to the IMD, temperatures in Tamil Nadu, Kerala, Karnataka, Telangana, and Andhra Pradesh are hovering around normal levels. While some coastal and interior areas witnessed partial cloud cover, the weather remains largely dry across the peninsula.

Forecast for the Next 48 Hours

Looking ahead, the IMD predicts that the cold and foggy conditions in North and Central India are likely to persist for the next 48 to 72 hours. The department has indicated that there are no signs of any major change in temperature trends immediately, suggesting that the current winter spell will continue unabated in the affected regions.
