Suresh Kalmadi, a senior Congress leader and former Union Minister, passed away on Tuesday morning in Pune. He was 81. According to family sources, the veteran politician had been battling a prolonged illness for some time. He breathed his last at approximately 3:30 AM on January 6.
Kalmadi was a prominent figure in Maharashtra politics, having served as a Member of Parliament representing Pune multiple times. His career spanned decades, during which he held significant portfolios, including serving as the Minister of State for Railways at the Centre. Beyond politics, he was a dominant force in sports administration, notably serving as the President of the Indian Olympic Association (IOA) for a long tenure.
Journey from Air Force to Politics
Before entering the political arena, Kalmadi served the nation as a pilot in the Indian Air Force. He later transitioned into public life, establishing himself as an influential leader in Pune. He is often credited for his contributions to the city’s infrastructure and development projects during his active years as an MP.
His family includes his wife, a son, a daughter-in-law, two daughters, a son-in-law, and grandchildren. News of his demise has drawn condolences from across the political spectrum and the sports fraternity.
Role in Sports Administration
Kalmadi’s association with sports ran deep. As the President of the IOA, he led India’s sports administration for several years. His tenure is particularly remembered for the 2010 Commonwealth Games held in Delhi. While his political career faced setbacks due to controversies surrounding the event, his role in attempting to establish Indian sports on an international platform remains a significant part of his legacy.
Last Rites Details
According to available information, mortal remains will be kept for public homage at ‘Kalmadi House’ in Erandwane until 2:00 PM today. The last rites are scheduled to take place at 3:30 PM at the Vaikunth Crematorium in Navi Peth, Pune.
