Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Tuesday expressed his condolences following the death of former Bangladesh Prime Minister and Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP) Chairperson, Begum Khaleda Zia, in Dhaka.

In a message posted on the social media platform X, PM Modi conveyed his sympathies to her family and the people of Bangladesh. “Deeply saddened to learn about the passing away of former Prime Minister and BNP Chairperson Begum Khaleda Zia in Dhaka,” he stated.

A Pioneering Leader

PM Modi paid tribute to Zia’s significant role in her nation’s history, noting her position as the first woman Prime Minister of Bangladesh. He emphasized her lasting impact on the country’s progress and on bilateral ties between New Delhi and Dhaka.

“As the first woman Prime Minister of Bangladesh, her important contributions towards the development of Bangladesh, as well as India-Bangladesh relations, will always be remembered.” — Narendra Modi

He extended his sincerest condolences to her family, adding, “May the Almighty grant her family the fortitude to bear this tragic loss.”

Personal Recollection

The Prime Minister also shared a personal memory of his interaction with the former premier. “I recall my warm meeting with her in Dhaka in 2015,” he wrote, reflecting on their past diplomatic engagement.

Concluding his message, PM Modi expressed hope that her work would continue to inspire the partnership between the two neighbouring countries. “We hope that her vision and legacy will continue to guide our partnership. May her soul rest in peace,” he said.
